Charlotte, NC is the financial hub of
the Char-Lanta mega-region. It is the largest city in North Carolina and
the county seat of Mecklenburg County. Charlotte is the largest city on
the Eastern Seaboard between Philadelphia, PA and Jacksonville, FL. In
2007, Charlotte's population was estimated to be 671,588; the Charlotte
metropolitan area population was 1,897,034; and the 13-county labor
market region had a population of 2,277,074.
Nicknamed
the Queen City (a monicker shared with Cincinnati, OH), Charlotte is
named for the German Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg. A second
nickname, "The Hornet's Nest," derives from an unhappy observation by British
commander Cornwallis during the American Revolutionary War.
In
2008, Charlotte was chosen the "Best Place to Live in America" by
relocate-america.com in its annual ranking, based on factors including
employment opportunities, crime rates, and housing affordability.
Charlotte was also named #8 of the 100 "Best Places to Live and Launch"
by CNNMoney.com, which selected cities based upon their vibrant lifestyles and
opportunities for new businesses.
